Fred Smith Jr.

Fred Smith Jr., 78, of Carlinville died Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Springfield.

He was born July 24, 1929, in Enos, the son of Fred H. and Ruth Beatrice Jackson Smith. He married Wanda Moore in 1964 in Colorado; she died Dec. 10, 1980.

Mr. Smith was a 1947 graduate of Carlinville High School. He was a First Sergeant and squad leader in an Army infantry unit during the Korean War and was awarded two Bronze Stars. He started his career delivering water and later picked up milk from farmers for Prairie Farms Dairy. In 1961 he started a tire business. He became a John Deere dealer in 1963, retiring in 1993. He operated Fred Smith Chevrolet-Buick from 1981-1987 and was part-owner and president of K&S Steel Company Inc. from 1980-1998. He had a used car business until 2005. Mr. Smith served on the Carlinville National Bank Board of Directors from October 1981 until his retirement in January 2005. He also served on the board of directors of Carlinville National Bankshares, Inc, including as chairman from April 1992 until January 2001. He served on the board of directors of Citizens State Bank of Shipman from October 1998 until January 2005. He enjoyed traveling and visited five continents and almost all 50 states. He held a private pilot’s license and flew his own plane to many locations in the Midwest. He was a member of American Legion Post #554, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, BPOE #1412, and Ansar Shrine.

Funeral services: 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, Memorial Christian Church with the Rev. Gary Farthing officiating. Organist Lettie Crays will accompany soloist Cynthia LaMar.

Burial: Mayfield Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers: Rich Walden, Gary Graham, Gary March, Shawn Davis, Jim Ashworth and Rick Rosentreter. Honorary pallbearer: Bob Rhoads, Jim Denby, Ed LaMar, Howard Clark, Nancy Ruyle, Don B. Denby Jr., Gene Adkins, John Hoback, Jim L. Curry, George Fogel and Charlie Monetti.

Surviving are a sister, Avis of near Chesterfield; and his friend Donna Haley.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, Carlinville Area Hospital Building Fund, or VNA Tip Hospice.


Virginia A. Lane

Virginia A. Lane, 67, of Gillespie died at 4:42 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield.

Graveside services: 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, Holy Cross Cemetery, Gillespie.

Kravanya Funeral Home in Gillespie is in charge of arrangements.
Surviving are a son, Howard Lee Tincher Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Michele Graham of Gillespie; three grandchldren; and six great-grandchildren.


Neela A. Triplett

Neela A. Triplett, 102, of Carlinville died at 10:40 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Carlinville Area Hospital.

She was born July 14, 1905, in Wolf Lake, a daughter of Robert Sam and Minnie Young Travis. She married Roy Triplett Sept. 29, 1922; he died in 1963. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Robert Travis and Glenn Travis; and a sister, Alice Smith.
Mrs. Triplett was a homemaker and was self-employed in domestic work. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in DuQuoin and was an avid gardener.

Graveside services: 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, Herrin City Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Ross officiating.

Heinz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Surviving are a daughter, Bernice Harper of Carlinville; three grandchildren, Bonnie (husband, Charlie) Frazier and Bill (wife, Karen) Harper, both of Carlinville, and Barbara (husband, John) Charnisky of Edwardsville; seven great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Living Stone Church in Litchfield.


Mary E. Leigh

Mary Ellen Leigh, 82, of Shelbyville, formerly of Carlinville and Virden, died at 12:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, at Shelbyville Manor.

She was born March 31, 1925, in Palmyra, a daughter of Joseph Leroy and Susan Laroma Duff Shinpaugh. She married Glenn Austif; he preceded her in death. She later married Oluf Leigh; he also preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were a grandson, Patrick Austif; her parents; two brothers, Marion Lee Shinpaugh and infant brother, Bruce Leroy Shinpaugh; her parents; and her companion, Maurice Mefford.

Mrs. Leigh was a graduate of Palmyra High School and a member of First United Methodist Church in Palmyra and Baptist Church in Chesterfield.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, Calvert & Ferry Funeal Home, Virden.

Funeral services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Shockey officiating.

Burial: Virden Cemetery.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Judy Austif of Pana; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters and a brother-in-law, Velma Jean Mecus of Germantown, Wis., Lois Ruth Tudor of Springfield and Joyce Ann and Lester Bettis of Carinville.


Dale E. Harbaugh

Dale E. Harbaugh, 64, of Carlin-ville died at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at Carlinville Area Hospital.

He was born Dec. 29, 1942, in Hettick, a son of John Lester and Iva Mae Clark Harbaugh. He married Clara Ludwig March 11, 1962, in Girard. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Charles Harbaugh and Carl Harbaugh.

Mr. Harbaugh attended Northwestern High School and worked in the agricultural and transportation business. He was the highway commissioner of Bird Township from 1993-2000. He collected many objects and could never let himself be idle. He attended Palmyra Grace Southern Baptist Church.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, Davis-Anderson Funeral Home.

Funeral services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, Davis-Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Allen officiating.
Burial: Hettick Cemetery. Pallbearers: Raymond Harbaugh, Mike Harbaugh, Jeff Evans, Trevor Kroeschel, Craig Kroeschel and Tom Kroeschel.

Surviving are his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Tuchy Harbaugh of Ripon, Calif., and Raymond and Genia Harbaugh of Hettick; three daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene and Don Norris of Hettick, Janet and Tom Kroeschel of Chesterfield and Patti and Rick Burger of Carlinville; nine grandchildren, Summer Norris, Whitney Norris, Lacey Norris, Trevor Kroeschel, Craig Kroeschel, Tracy Vinson, Michael Harbaugh, Drake Harbaugh and Dillian Harbaugh; two great-grandchildren; five brothers and three sisters-in-law, George P. and Darlene Harbaugh of Dorchester, Elmer and Jo Harbaugh of LaMonte, Mo., Ralph David and Ginny Harbaugh and Ernest Harbaugh, all of Carlinville, and Wayne Harbaugh of Warrensburg, Mo.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Win Black of Bemidji, Minn., Louise Fry of Visalia, Calif., and Shirley and Bob Lee of North Lauderdale, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Imogene Denbow

Imogene Denbow, 75, of Pana, formerly of Carlinville, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, at Pana Community Hospital.

She was born Dec. 8, 1931, in Carrollton, a daughter of Harold C. and Rhea T. Chapman Carter. She married Kenneth H. Challans Feb. 26, 1949, in Carlinville; he died June 14, 2001. She married Robert S. Denbow Jan. 21, 1995, in Pana. Also preceding her in death were a son, David Challans; her parents; four brothers, Cleburn Carter, Lawrence Carter, Wayne Carter, and Lowell Carter; and a sister, Virginia Joyce Koester.

Mrs. Denbow was a Carlinville High School graduate. She was a licensed medical recorder at Pana Community Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur. She was a CNA at Heritage Manor in Pana. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Springfield.

Graveside services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, Mayfield Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Don Pease officiating.

Surviving are her husband; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard H. and Jolayne Challans of Ramsey, and James P. Challans of Pana; a daughter, Marla G. Leigh of Pana; two stepsons, Danny Lee (wife, Ann) Denbow of Waynesville, Mo., and Robert Frank (wife, Cheryl) Denbow of Findlay; a stepdaughter, Bonnie Lou (husband, David) Miller of Pana; nine grandchildren, Colleen (husband, Aaron) Halford, David S. (wife, Patsey) Challans, Shelly Challans, Jamie R. Challans, Jared K. Challans, Kena (husband, Brian) McGlaughlen, Jennifer Bowman, Stephine Leigh and Jacob Steck; six stepgrandchildren, Beth Denbow, Janet Denbow, James (wife, Melissa) Denbow, Charyl (husband, Tracy) Pingleton, Kimberly (husband, Mark) Westenhaver, and Jerline Denbow; 10 great-grandchildren, Ashley Halford, Luke Halford, Samantha Challans, Alyssa Challans, Meloney Challans, Sierra Challans, Matthew Passoni, Dalton McGlaughlen, Brayden McGlaughlen and Madison McGlaughlen; six step-great-grandchildren, Kimberly Denbow, David Denbow, Anna Pingleton, Michael Pingleton, Jacob Westenhaver and Justin Westenhaver; and a brother, Karl F. Carter of Carlinville.

Wyndal E. Smith

Wyndal E. Smith, 92, of Carlinville, formerly of Hagaman, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at Carlinville Area Hospital.

He was born April 16, 1915, near Palmyra, a son of Luther and Lois Coots Smith. He married Mary E. Robinson March 30, 1940, in Venice. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Reid in 1998; two brothers, John A. Smith and Paul Smith; and two sisters, Maxine Zelmer and Maribel Stotler.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Palmyra High School and a self-employed farmer. He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Hagaman, Fox Hunters Association and served as chairman of Macoupin County A.S.C.S. Board.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, Heinz Funeral Home.
Funeral services: 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, Ss. Mary & Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. George Morelock officiating. Organist Marion Haas will accompany Ss. Mary & Joseph Church Choir.
Burial: St. Catherine Cemetery. Pallbearers: Brad Butcher, Greg Reid, Jeff Reid, Matt Smith, Becky Sanson and Rick McCaherty.
Surviving are his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert Smith of Chesterfield and Mick and Linda Smith of Carlinville; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Allen Butcher of Virden; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth McCaherty of Carlin-ville; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Catherine Cemetery or Chesterfield Community Club.


Ray o. Deihl

Ray O. Deihl, 86, of Girard, formerly of Morrisonville, died at 2:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007, at Carlinville Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Girard.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home.

Burial: Girard Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Lucille; a son, Kenneth R. (wife, Janice M.) Deihl of Girard; a daughter, Nancy A. (husband, Ronnie G.) Bouillon of Girard; five grandchildren; a brother, Roy (wife, Lois) Deihl of West Fork, Ark.; a sister, Emma Schreiner of Flushing, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Girard Food Pantry, Girard Rescue Squad or Prairieland Ambulance.


Kenneth n. Underwood

Kenneth Norman Underwood, 94, of Staunton died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at Community Memorial Hospital in Staunton.

Lorene Sullivan, 84, of Sparks, formerly of Mt. Olive, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at Tahoe Pacific at South Meadows Hospital in Reno, Nev.

Cathy Adams

Cathy Shultz Adams, 57, of St. Paul’s, N.C., formerly of Shipman, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C.
